Instruct the officers regarding the safe operation of the patrol vehicle when operating it under emergency circumstances. This includes considerations and responsibilities under the law, best practices and department policy; when to use extra caution; and the use of good decision making, including when to cease emergency operations. Supervisors will benefit by reviewing their decision-making considerations when reviewing the emergency operation of department vehicles as well as taking preventive measures to avoid liability exposure. The course consists of a combination of classroom instruction and simulator exercises.
Course Objectives
- Develop and improve decision making when engaged in emergency driving.
- Develop and improve driving skills required in emergency circumstances.
- Reduce the potential for crashes and encourage safe outcomes for all involved.
- Reduce the potential for monetary loss due to crashes involved in emergency driving.
