Emergency Driving & Pursuit Management

Instruct the officers regarding the safe operation of the patrol vehicle when operating it under emergency circumstances.  This includes considerations and responsibilities under the law, best practices and department policy; when to use extra caution; and the use of good decision making, including when to cease emergency operations.  Supervisors will benefit by reviewing their decision-making considerations when reviewing the emergency operation of department vehicles as well as taking preventive measures to avoid liability exposure.  The course consists of a combination of classroom instruction and simulator exercises.

Course Objectives

  • Develop and improve decision making when engaged in emergency driving.
  • Develop and improve driving skills required in emergency circumstances.
  • Reduce the potential for crashes and encourage safe outcomes for all involved.
  • Reduce the potential for monetary loss due to crashes involved in emergency driving.
